Hello from Nepal.
I have been very fortunate to spend the past 3 months working
with the mobile surgical team as they traveled to their western
Nepal camps. This experience has brought me even more respect
for their dedication. A day in the operating theater could
start as early as 5am and end at 9pm or later depending on
the needs of the children. During a 4 day surgical camp in
Dhangadhi 85 cases were completed by two doctors and supportive
staff. (A typical surgeon might do 5 to 10/week.) It was
cold and dark at the end of each day as the as the crew returned
to the hotel where a full Dahl Bhat Dinner was waiting for
them. Without heated rooms or hot water for showers the Nepali
women on the team washed their clothes with frozen fingers
and shampooed their hair with cold water, in the dark mind
you. Me, well you could easily find me
In my bed hidden under warm wool blankets.
Our patients
come from great distances which sometimes require a 2 day
walk and a bus trip. They deal with harsh elements, lack
of food and uncomfortable surroundings on a daily basis.
These are indeed hearty people that have learned how to deal
with suffering. It is a pleasure to see a smile on their
face after surgery and a true delight to hear the words…………Thank
You!
There are soo
many interesting experiences that I would love to share with
you, unfortunately I'm limited by space. Call CMAF to schedule
a slide presentation and I will share stories with your church
or organization.
